Airalo has grown fast since 2019 and now claims more than 30 million customers. A $220 million Series C round made it a unicorn. It is registered in Delaware and run out of Singapore. The catalogue holds single-country eSIMs, regional bundles and worldwide plans. Regional cover spans Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Oceania and the Middle East.
Like every seller of its kind, Airalo owns no network. It buys wholesale from local carriers and resells that data as a fixed-price, fixed-length package. It is not metered roaming. The app runs in 53 languages and takes many currencies. It holds 4.7 stars on the App Store and 4.6 on Google Play.
For a cruise, though, Airalo matters only at the ports. It sells no maritime product at all, so the sailing itself is somebody else’s problem.
What happens when the ship leaves port
An Airalo eSIM connects to exactly the same towers a phone would roam onto abroad. It comes alive when the ship ties up and a local network appears. It goes quiet again as the ship pulls out past roughly 12 nautical miles. There is no ship-based or satellite product behind it. Treat every stop as a fresh local network to catch. A Caribbean week calling at four countries wants either one regional bundle covering all four, or four local eSIMs installed before leaving home.
What Airalo costs, and what that buys
Local eSIMs start small. A 1GB bundle costs only a few dollars in busy markets, and climbs with size and with pricier countries.
