What connectivity is like in the Norwegian Fjords

Bergen, Geiranger, Flåm, Ålesund and the fjord network, often combined with North Cape sailings. Norway has excellent nationwide coverage from Telenor and Telia, and the fjords are narrow enough that a land eSIM often holds signal deep inland — a rare case where the terrestrial option overperforms. Open-sea legs along the coast and any North Sea crossing are where the maritime plan matters.

Yes, if it is one of the at-sea plans listed on this page; no, if it is a regular Norwegian Fjords travel eSIM. The boundary is about 12 nautical miles from the coast, beyond which no land network exists to attach to. On a Norwegian Fjords itinerary that is around 25% of your days, which is why the maritime plan is treated here as a separate purchase from the port one.

02Why does my eSIM stop working in a fjord when I can see land?

Because mobile signal needs line of sight to a tower and a fjord wall does not provide it. Bergen and the coastal towns have strong Telenor and Telia coverage; a thousand metres of granite between you and the nearest mast does not care how close the shore is.

03Does a maritime eSIM work in the fjords?

Not usually. Maritime networks activate around 12 nautical miles offshore, and inside a fjord you are nowhere near that. You fall between the two systems — too far from a tower, too close to shore for the ship’s network to switch on.
