Cruise eSIMs by region
The right plan depends less on where you are sailing than on how much of the time you are out of range of land. A Mediterranean itinerary can be one sea day in seven; a transatlantic crossing is six in seven. That ratio changes the answer completely.

How to turn a sea-day ratio into a purchase
The ratio in the table is the only number you need to size a plan, and it works like this. Multiply your nights aboard by the ratio to get sea days; the remainder is port days. A seven-night sailing in Greek Isles at 15% is roughly 1 sea days and 6 ashore. The same week in Transatlantic at 90% is about 6 days with no land in reach.
Those two itineraries want opposite purchases, which is why a single “best cruise eSIM” recommendation is usually wrong:
- Port-heavy regions. Most of your connected time is ashore, so a good regional eSIM does the bulk of the work and the at-sea plan is a small top-up — or the ship’s Wi-Fi bought for the one or two sea days that need it.
- Sea-heavy regions. The maritime plan is the main purchase and the port eSIM is the afterthought. On a crossing there may be only one or two calls, and buying a thirty-day regional pack for them is money thrown away.
- The middle. Around half and half, the two approaches converge and the deciding factor becomes how many devices you are covering — because ship Wi-Fi is billed per device and a maritime eSIM shared over a hotspot is not.
What the region changes besides the ratio
Two things, and both catch people out. The first is which local carrier your port eSIM lands on: a plan that roams onto the weaker network in a given port is slow everywhere ashore no matter how much data it carries, which is why each region page lists the carriers at every berth rather than just naming the countries.
The second is latitude. Satellite coverage weakens the further you sail from the equator, so high-latitude regions see real degradation on exactly the scenic days people book them for — and steep-sided fjords add a second problem that no satellite can solve, since the obstruction is a thousand metres of rock rather than distance. Neither is a fault with your plan, and neither is fixable by buying a bigger one.
