Is Maya.net any use on a cruise ship?

Overview

Mobile Maya Inc. launched Maya Mobile in 2021. It's a travel eSIM brand built around one universal data profile, not a shelf of country-specific plans. The base Global plan reaches more than 165 countries on local 4G and 5G networks. It's sold as unlimited data in 3, 7, 14 or 30-day blocks. You manage it through the Maya Mobile: Travel eSIM app, or the maya.net dashboard in your browser.

The Global + Cruise plan extends that same unlimited setup to a named set of cruise lines. At launch, that list was Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Norwegian, Princess, Royal Caribbean International and Virgin Voyages. Maya counts more than 20 cruise lines in total once smaller and regional operators are added. It's built as one purchase for your whole itinerary, not two separate products for land and sea. That puts it in the same bracket as GigSky's Cruise + Land plans, rather than the ocean-only sellers.

Support runs around the clock through WhatsApp, with a real person on the other end rather than a bot. Maya repeats that detail in its own cruise-plan announcement.

Coverage at sea

Once your ship is at sea, the Global + Cruise eSIM connects to its own maritime data system. It doesn't switch to a shore carrier. That's the same trick GigSky and Saily use to get you data beyond normal mobile network range. Maya markets the at-sea half as unlimited. But it still carries the fair-use limits every maritime seller applies. A ship shares one satellite link across thousands of passengers, so there's only so much to go around. Messaging, browsing and apps like WhatsApp work well. Sustained video streaming isn't guaranteed, even on a nominally unlimited allowance. Coverage is locked to the named cruise-line list. Sail on a line that isn't listed, and the plan drops back to land-only Global behaviour for the whole trip.

Setup and activation

Buying a Global + Cruise plan gets you a QR code. Scan and install it while you're still on home wi-fi, well before you board. The eSIM download needs an active internet connection to finish, and you won't have one once you're underway. Maya recommends leaving the profile inactive until you need it. That way you can install it days ahead, then set it as your data line just before you leave. From there, it picks up shore networks at your first port, then the ship's own maritime system once you're at sea.

Verdict

Maybe you'd rather buy one plan and stop thinking about it. If so, Maya's Global + Cruise is a solid single-purchase answer. You get unlimited data, one eSIM, and coverage that follows the ship from your home port, through open water, and back again. That's as long as your cruise line sits on Maya's published list. If you're pricing your trip by the gigabyte, it's still worth comparing a metered at-sea plan against Maya's flat rate. For a lighter data habit, the metered option might work out cheaper.
