Does an eSIM work on a cruise ship?
Short answer
Only in port, unless you buy a maritime eSIM. This catches people out because nothing looks wrong at first: the phone behaves perfectly at the terminal, then goes quiet 45 minutes to an hour after the ship pulls away.

Mobile networks are built for people on land. A coastal mast radiates out to sea as a side effect, not by design, and the usable range over water is about 10–12 nautical miles — call it 45 minutes to an hour after the ship clears the harbour. After that your phone will show no service, or worse, will latch onto the ship’s network and start roaming.
This catches out even experienced travellers, because the eSIM was working perfectly ten minutes ago. Nothing is broken. There is simply no network out there.
The two coverage zones are mutually exclusive
Ships carry a maritime cellular network — historically branded Cellular at Sea, backhauled by satellite and increasingly by Starlink. For licensing reasons that network is switched off within roughly 12 nautical miles of land, exactly where terrestrial coverage begins. So the two systems hand off to each other and never overlap:

That last row surprises people on Alaska and Norway itineraries. Being near land is not the same as being near a mast — Tracy Arm, Endicott Arm and most of the Inside Passage have no cellular coverage whatsoever despite mountains a mile away.
One thing to know before choosing: when a phone does connect to the ship network on a carrier plan, the line on the bill reads Cellular at Sea (or the ship’s maritime operator) and it is charged at roaming-at-sea rates — which is why the “eSIM vs international plan” question matters. Your four options on a sea day

How to avoid roaming charges on a cruise
Put the phone into airplane mode as the ship leaves port, then turn Wi-Fi or your maritime eSIM back on deliberately. Disable data roaming on your home line for the whole trip, and if you use a dual-SIM setup, confirm your primary line is not silently set as the data line. Almost every horror-story cruise phone bill comes from a handset roaming onto the ship’s network by itself while its owner slept.

01Does an eSIM work on a cruise ship?+
A normal travel eSIM works only while the ship is within about 10–12 nautical miles of land, which in practice means in port and shortly after leaving it. In open water there are no mobile masts to connect to, so it has no signal. 03What is Cellular at Sea and should I use it?+

It works, but it is normally the most expensive option on the ship. A maritime eSIM uses the same network at a fraction of the cost.
04Should I put my phone in airplane mode on a cruise?+
Yes — turn on airplane mode and then re-enable Wi-Fi or your maritime eSIM deliberately. That prevents your phone quietly roaming onto the ship’s cellular network at day-pass or per-megabyte rates. The genuinely expensive cruise phone bills almost all come from a phone connecting on its own during a sea day.
05Is ship Wi-Fi any good now that Starlink is installed?+
Speeds improved a lot; prices did not. Most major fleets now run Starlink backhaul with latency around 80–90 ms, which is enough for video calls on the premium tiers. But basic tiers were downgraded to social and messaging, pricing stayed at roughly $16–40 per device per day, and per-device charging is still the norm.
06Does an eSIM work on a ferry?+
On short crossings like Dover–Calais, largely yes — you stay within land coverage for most of the journey. On overnight routes such as Copenhagen–Oslo, Newcastle–Amsterdam or Gothenburg–Kiel you spend hours genuinely offshore, and only GigSky’s ferry-branded plans cover those.
