GigSky: does it work on a cruise?
Short answer
GigSky runs its own network across 200+ countries rather than reselling somebody else's, which is why its cruise plans behave differently from most. A Cruise + Land plan rides the ship's own satellite-backed network out at sea, then hands over to local carriers the moment you dock, all on one profile and with nothing to switch. The cheaper Cruise Only version keeps the sea half and drops the land half, so it only makes sense next to a second eSIM for your days ashore. Try it before you pay: the trial costs nothing and proves the connection on your own ship.

Overview
GigSky was founded in 2010 by Ravi Rishy-Maharaj. It's headquartered in Palo Alto, California. It runs its own US-based eSIM network, rather than reselling someone else's. That's a difference the company points out itself. It reports more than one million users worldwide. Its App Store rating sits at 4.8 out of 5. On-site reviews average 4.3 out of 5, across roughly 5,900 of them.
Its maritime business is what sets GigSky apart. It's the only consumer eSIM brand selling data built specifically for cruise ships, covering 290-plus vessels across 200-plus countries. It's also the only one selling ferry-branded plans for named operators. Those are Brittany Ferries, Color Line, DFDS and Stena Line, not a generic ferry label.
GigSky positions itself as a mainstream, one-purchase option. Activation is instant, and there are no contracts. An official Visa partnership discounts plans for eligible cardholders. You get a single eSIM built to cover a whole sailing, rather than a stack of separate country plans.
Coverage at sea
GigSky's Cruise + Land eSIM starts working once your ship is roughly 12 nautical miles from shore. That's about an hour after you leave port. It then switches automatically to a local carrier once you're back in port. That's all on one profile, with no manual toggling. Cruise Only plans use the same maritime network but drop the land half. Those suit travellers who already carry a separate port eSIM. There's a short gap after you clear the terminal, before you reach that 12-mile threshold. You'll have no signal at all during it, and GigSky is upfront about that rather than hiding it. A Messaging + Essentials tier covers the basics without touching your main data. It keeps WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, text-based email, and maps or rideshare apps working. Unlimited plans are fair-use throttled after 3.5GB in a day, so they're not truly uncapped.
Plans and pricing
Prices for Royal Caribbean's Cruise + Land tier were checked in September 2026. There's a free trial too: 100MB over seven days, with no card required. From there, plans start at 512MB for one day at $10.99. 1GB for seven days costs $19.99, or $2.86 a day. 3GB for 15 days is $31.99, 20% off the usual $39.99. 5GB for 30 days is $55.99, down from $69.99. And 10GB for 30 days is $95.99, down from $119.99.
GigSky also sells an Essentials plan, built around that messaging and maps allowance. It's priced separately from the metered data tiers. Visa cardholders get up to 30% off through GigSky's official Visa partnership. That changes the per-gigabyte math a lot on the bigger plans.
Ferry-branded plans are sold separately from the cruise-ship catalogue. They start from $7.99, for Brittany Ferries, Color Line, DFDS and Stena Line. That's the only named-operator ferry eSIM pricing in the market.

Setup and activation
You buy and install GigSky plans inside the app, or at gigsky.com. A short quiz there checks your phone supports eSIM before you pay. GigSky recommends installing while you're still on home wi-fi, before you leave for the ship. Turn off cellular data switching on your main line too. That stops your phone falling back to roaming once the ship's network appears. The eSIM then sits there quietly until the vessel is far enough offshore to connect on its own.
Strengths and limits
- It's the only consumer eSIM with ferry-branded plans for named operators.
- The free 100MB trial needs no card, so you can test it before you pay.
- One eSIM switches automatically between the ship and port networks.
- Visa cardholders get up to 30% off.
- It runs its own network, rather than reselling someone else's.
- It's not the cheapest per gigabyte among the three at-sea sellers.
- There is a short signal gap between leaving port and offshore activation.
- Unlimited plans throttle after 3.5GB in a day.
- Cruise + Land duplicates the cost for anyone who already has a port eSIM.

Verdict
You might want one eSIM to cover a whole cruise, without switching profiles mid-voyage. GigSky's Cruise + Land plan is the most complete single-purchase option out there. It's backed by a company that runs its own network, rather than reselling someone else's. The free 100MB trial takes most of the risk out of trying it. It's not the cheapest cost per gigabyte at sea, though. And that brief signal gap leaving port is worth planning around. Don't expect it to disappear.
Other providers that work at sea
The rest of the field selling genuine at-sea coverage, so you can compare on the same terms:
Where GigSky loses
We promote GigSky first across this site and we are paid to do it, so here is the other side stated plainly. It is not the cheapest per gigabyte at sea — Saily undercuts it, sometimes substantially. If you already carry a regional eSIM for ports, the “+ Land” half of Cruise + Land is coverage you are paying for twice, and the Cruise Only tiers exist for exactly that reason. And on a pure transatlantic crossing with a full-voyage ship Wi-Fi package, the ship can simply be the better buy.
What keeps it our default anyway: the widest ship list in the market, the only single-SKU sea-and-port coverage, the only ferry-branded plans anywhere, and the only free trial — so you can test it before committing. Full reasoning on how we test.
Frequently asked questions
01Does GigSky work on a cruise ship?+
Yes. GigSky sells genuine maritime plans that connect to the ship's own at-sea cellular network, well beyond the reach of land masts. Cruise + Land covers both halves on one profile, so there is nothing to switch between.
02What does GigSky's Messaging + Essentials feature actually cover?+
It lets WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, text-only Gmail, and maps or rideshare apps keep working. It doesn't touch your main data allowance. Voice and video calls, and attachments, are excluded. So it suits staying reachable and finding a taxi in port, rather than replacing a full data plan.
03Can one GigSky account cover a whole family's phones?+
Yes. GigSky lets you buy Cruise eSIMs for multiple travellers under one account. You can top any of them up mid-trip. You will also get a notification when someone reaches 80% of their allowance. That is handy for a cabin sharing one connectivity budget.
04Does the ferry-branded plan work the same way as the cruise plan?+
It uses the same at-sea model: one eSIM that activates offshore and hands off to land carriers. It's sold and priced separately, though, starting at $7.99. That covers four named operators: Brittany Ferries, Color Line, DFDS and Stena Line.
05Does buying a bigger data bucket actually save money on GigSky?+
Yes. Checked in September 2026, 1GB for seven days costs $19.99. That's about $20 per gigabyte. 10GB for 30 days costs $95.99, under $10 per gigabyte. A longer sailing usually works out cheaper bought as one big plan, rather than several small top-ups.
06Which cruise regions is GigSky good for?+
It is ranked for Alaska. Cruise + Land covers both the glacier sea days and the port towns on one eSIM.
07Is there a GigSky discount code?+
Yes — ESIMDUDE. Exclusive: 10% off all GigSky cruise & ferry eSIM plans Paste it into the promo box at checkout before paying. If the total does not move, the code has lapsed and should be reported so it can be pulled from this page.
Next steps. The full catalogue with live prices, the ship list and the free-trial mechanics live on the GigSky cruise eSIM hub. If you have decided to buy, read what the ESIMDUDE code is actually worth first — on a Visa Infinite or Signature card GigSky’s own benefit beats it, and the two cannot be stacked.
Compare GigSky with
- Voye Global — A global connectivity brand whose Cruise eSIM rides the same Cellular at Sea maritime network as GigSky and Saily, across 220+ ships and 27 lines. It is sea-only by design — it does not connect in port — and it has no free trial, so it reads as a cheaper Saily rather than as a GigSky alternative.
- Red Bull MOBILE eSIM — Telenor Maritime exclusive consumer partner since April 2024, covering 150+ named vessels that the Cellular at Sea providers largely miss — AIDA, Costa, P&O, Cunard, TUI/Marella and the Stena, DFDS, Brittany Ferries and Color Line fleets. Its 250 MB plan at EUR 5 is the cheapest way onto a ship network anywhere; the allowances are correspondingly small.
- abesteSIM — A value eSIM retailer with a documented partner API and wide country coverage. Port-day plans; zero cruise SKUs.
- Airalo — The largest travel eSIM marketplace, with local and regional plans in 200+ countries. No maritime product at all, but its regional packs are the default safe choice for port days on almost every itinerary.
