PlanetTele for cruise passengers: reviewed

Short answer

Planet eSIM is the travel-data arm of Planet Telecom, a UK telecom operator regulated by Ofcom. The company was founded in 1999. It sells country and regional eSIM plans in more than 180 destinations. There is no contract, and support runs 24/7 from the UK. That is a longer history than most eSIM-only sellers can claim. The plan itself is a normal land-only eSIM, though.

Overview

Planet Telecom Ltd was set up in Bournemouth, England, in August 1999. It has spent more than 25 years serving UK businesses. That work covers VoIP phone systems, inbound numbers and other connectivity services. Ofcom has regulated it the whole time. Planet eSIM is a newer product from the same company. It turns that experience into pay-once travel data, not enterprise voice services.

The eSIM catalogue covers more than 180 destinations. These are grouped into eight regions. They are Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, North America, Oceania and South America. Plans are sold by country or by region, not as one global bundle. There is no contract on any plan. You pay upfront for each plan, and it simply expires afterwards. Planet Telecom also promotes its Trustpilot rating of "Rated Excellent". It backs that up with 24/7 UK-based phone and email support.

Coverage on a cruise

Planet eSIM’s plans run on national mobile networks in each country. Those networks stop broadcasting about 12 nautical miles from the coast. That is the same limit every land-based eSIM runs into. A plan bought for a cruise switches on when the ship docks in a covered country. Once the ship pulls away from land again, it falls silent. So it works strictly as a port-day plan, not as continuous coverage for the whole voyage.

Plans and pricing

Entry-level country pricing runs low, for the smallest packages in each destination. France starts from £1.04. Italy and Spain start from £0.83, and Turkey from £0.78. A 10GB Spain plan starts from around £4.50 (checked September 2026). You pay once at checkout, with no recurring charge. Activation waits until you arrive at your destination, rather than starting the moment you buy.

Coverage is sold by country or region, not as one flat worldwide rate. So a multi-port cruise touching several of the eight regions may need more than one plan. Each plan is delivered by scanning a QR code sent by email. There is no companion app to install. Planet Telecom’s support line answers around the clock, seven days a week. That is a longer support window than several newer eSIM-only competitors offer.

Setup and activation

You buy a Planet eSIM plan on planetesim.com. The QR code arrives by email, and you install it yourself. There is no app to download. You need a live connection to install an eSIM at all. So the safe routine for a cruise is simple. Scan the code and set it up on your home wi-fi before you leave. Then leave data roaming switched off until the plan is meant to activate. That is when you reach a covered port.

Strengths and limits

Strengths
  • It is backed by a UK telecom operator with more than 25 years of regulated history.
  • You get 24/7 phone and email support, not just a ticket system.
  • Entry pricing is low across major European destinations and beyond.
  • There is no contract. Each plan is a one-off payment with no auto-renewal.
Limits
  • The signal ends with the shore masts, so there is no shipboard option.
  • There is no dedicated app, so you manage everything through the website and email.
  • Refund terms are not published as a fixed, detailed policy.
  • A multi-region cruise may need more than one plan, since there is no single worldwide bundle.

Cruise and ferry plans

The plans database on this site holds cruise, ferry and maritime products only. PlanetTele publishes none, so there is no plan table on this page. Its regional data plans remain the relevant purchase for port days.

Verdict

Planet eSIM suits you if you like a longer-established, regulated telecom operator behind your port-day eSIM. Round-the-clock UK support is a genuine plus here. It brings no shipboard connectivity, though. So you will still want a real at-sea plan or ship wi-fi for sea days. If your cruise crosses more than one region, check your itinerary first. Match it against the eight covered regions before you buy a single plan.

Frequently asked questions

01Does PlanetTele work on a cruise ship?

Docked, yes; underway, no. Nothing in the PlanetTele range talks to a satellite or a ship-board base station, so the connection ends with the coastline and picks up again at the next quay.

02Is Planet eSIM its own company, or part of something bigger?

Planet eSIM is a product line from Planet Telecom Ltd. That is a UK telecom operator founded in 1999. For most of its history, it served businesses with VoIP and connectivity services. Travel data plans, sold as Planet eSIM, came later.

03Does one Planet eSIM plan cover several regions on the same cruise?

Not automatically. Plans are sold by country or by region. There are eight regional groupings in total. Those cover Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, North America, Oceania and South America. If your itinerary crosses more than one region, you may need a plan for each.

04What support is there if a Planet eSIM plan fails to activate at a port?

Planet Telecom publishes 24/7 UK-based phone and email support on its site. There is also a fault-reporting system you can use. That is a wider support window than many eSIM-only retailers offer. Some limit contact to email or in-app chat during business hours only.
