About the Virgin Voyages fleet
Virgin Voyages is the adults-only newcomer, sailing four ships on Caribbean, Mediterranean and transatlantic itineraries with a design-hotel aesthetic and an all-in fare philosophy. That philosophy extends to connectivity: basic Wi-Fi is included in the fare rather than sold by the day, which is genuinely unusual at sea and removes most of the reason to buy a separate at-sea plan. The catch is the word "basic" — included tiers are tuned for messaging and browsing, not video calls or large uploads. Sailors who need reliable throughput on sea days still benefit from a maritime eSIM as a backup, and anyone spending real time ashore should carry a regional eSIM regardless.

Two checks before you spend anything

Virgin Voyages was first in the industry with a hybrid MEO and LEO satellite setup — SES O3b mPOWER combined with Starlink, announced in February 2024 — which on paper gives it the fastest connection at sea. The adults-only, four-ship fleet also means fewer people sharing it than on a 6,000-berth megaship.
The Virgin Voyages Wi-Fi trap
The marketing says free Wi-Fi for every Sailor and that is true, but the included Basic tier is one device per person and blocks streaming and video calls outright. Classic adds audio calls only. You reach streaming and video calling at Premium, and VPN support only at the top Work from Sea tier. "Free Wi-Fi for all" and "the Wi-Fi you were imagining" are not the same product.
How data actually gets used on these itineraries
An adults-only ship with a heavy nightlife and dining programme generates evening-concentrated use rather than the all-day family pattern, and Sailors tend to want social uploads rather than sustained streaming — which is exactly what the included tier handles well and the blocked features do not affect.
One port worth knowing about
Virgin’s Caribbean itineraries call at its own beach club at Bimini, where the ship is alongside and Bahamian networks reach easily. That is a genuinely good place to use a cheap regional eSIM rather than the ship package, and it is a stop most itineraries include.
