GigSky vs OneRoam for cruises

Short answer

Both cover the ship at sea and the ports ashore on one profile, so this is the closest head-to-head in the market. They differ on how they bill you: GigSky sells gigabytes, OneRoam sells days of unlimited data. GigSky reaches more hulls (290+ vessels against 200+) and is the only one of the two you can test free before you pay.

Buy GigSky if your usage is light or unpredictable, if you want the ESIMDUDE discount, or if you want to prove your ship connects before spending anything. Buy OneRoam if you know you will use a lot on specific days and would rather stop counting.

You are choosing a billing model, not a network

This is the one pairing on the site where both products do the same job. Each covers the maritime network at sea and land networks in port on a single eSIM, so neither leaves you with a second purchase or a profile to switch. That removes the argument every other comparison here turns on, and what is left underneath is a pricing question.

GigSky meters you. You buy an allowance, it lasts until it runs out, and light days cost you nothing. OneRoam sells unlimited data by the day across the ship and 140-plus countries ashore, so a heavy day costs the same as a quiet one and a quiet one costs the same as a heavy one. Neither model is better; they are better for different weeks.

The way to decide is to look at the shape of your usage rather than its total. Someone who checks messages twice a day for six days and then video-calls home once is a metered customer. Someone who works two full days at sea and ignores their phone the rest of the trip is a day-pass customer. Averaging those two people produces a recommendation that is wrong for both.

OneRoam plans

Unlimited data on one eSIM that covers both the ship at sea and 140+ countries on land, across 200+ vessels. Priced by duration rather than gigabytes, and the only provider we list that quotes in GBP, EUR and CAD as well as dollars.

Where the fleet lists differ, and why it decides some cruises outright

GigSky publishes coverage on 290-plus ships; OneRoam publishes 200-plus. Both run on maritime networks fitted hull by hull rather than fleet by fleet, so the overlap is large but not total, and a ship on one list is not automatically on the other.

That matters more than the gap in the numbers suggests. If your vessel appears on only one of the two lists, the pricing argument on this page is irrelevant — you buy the one that covers you. Check the exact ship name on both providers’ own pages before you compare a single figure, because a cheaper plan that does not reach your hull costs infinitely more per gigabyte.

Where both cover you, GigSky’s wider list is worth something in itself if you cruise more than once a year: the same profile is more likely to work on your next ship without a fresh decision.

The currency question nobody else on this site raises

OneRoam is the only provider in our catalogue that quotes in pounds, euros and Canadian dollars as well as US dollars. Everything else here — including GigSky — prices in USD, and a non-US buyer pays a card conversion fee on top of the sticker price, typically two to three per cent.

On a small plan that is pennies and not worth a sentence. On a week of unlimited daily data it is real money, and it is money that never appears in a per-gigabyte comparison because it is added by your bank rather than by the provider. If you are buying in sterling or euros, price both in your own currency before deciding which is cheaper.

Testing, discounts and what you can find out before you pay

GigSky gives you 100 MB free with no card, which on a comparison this close is the tiebreaker. It answers the one question neither provider’s coverage list can: whether the equipment on your specific hull actually hands you a connection. OneRoam has no trial, so with OneRoam the first time you find out is after you have paid and sailed.

GigSky also carries the ESIMDUDE code for ten per cent, which we are paid on and are telling you about anyway because it changes the arithmetic. We have no equivalent arrangement with OneRoam, and if the day-pass model suits your week better, that is the one to buy.

Who should buy which

The answer changes with the itinerary more than with the provider, so this is by traveller rather than by feature.

Our verdict

GigSky for most people, and the trial is the reason rather than the price. On a comparison this close, being able to confirm your hull connects before you pay is worth more than a few dollars per gigabyte either way.

OneRoam if you have heavy days and quiet days in the same week, or if you are buying outside the dollar. The unlimited-by-day model is genuinely different from everything else in this catalogue and it suits a specific traveller very well.

What we would not do: buy either on the strength of a fleet count. Check your ship on both lists first. If only one covers it, the decision is made, and everything above is a footnote.

GigSky vs OneRoam: your questions

01Is OneRoam really unlimited at sea?

It is sold as unlimited data for the duration you buy, covering the ship and 140-plus countries ashore on the same profile. As with every unlimited maritime product, read the operator’s own fair-use terms before assuming it will carry sustained streaming — maritime capacity is shared across the vessel and no provider can conjure bandwidth that the ship does not have.

02Which covers more cruise ships, GigSky or OneRoam?

GigSky, on published numbers: 290-plus vessels against OneRoam’s 200-plus. The lists overlap heavily because both resell the same maritime networks, but they are not identical. Search your exact ship name on both before you choose, because coverage is fitted per hull rather than per line.

03Can I try either before my cruise?

GigSky yes, OneRoam no. GigSky’s free 100 MB needs no card and is the only way to confirm in advance that your specific ship hands you a connection. If you are leaning towards OneRoam, it is still worth installing the GigSky trial purely as a coverage test.

04Does either work in port?

Both do, and that is what separates this pairing from the Saily comparison. GigSky Cruise + Land and OneRoam both carry land coverage on the same profile, so your phone moves between the ship network and the local one without you touching anything.

05Which is cheaper for a seven-night cruise?

It depends entirely on how much you use rather than how long you sail. Metered billing wins on a light week; unlimited-by-day wins as soon as you have two or three genuinely heavy days. Work out your rough daily need first — our calculator does it from your itinerary — and the answer usually becomes obvious.
