GigSky vs Maya.net for cruises
Short answer
Both cover the ship and the ports on a single plan, so neither strands you in port. GigSky lists 290+ vessels and sells you gigabytes; Maya names 7 mainstream lines and sells you days, in unlimited windows of 3, 7, 14 and 30.
Maya wins if you hate metering yourself and your ship is on its narrower list. GigSky wins on vessel coverage, on being testable before you pay, and on regional land plans that are actually useful ashore.

Metered or unlimited — and why the answer is about your habits, not the price
Maya’s Global + Cruise plans are unlimited by duration, sold in three, seven, fourteen and thirty-day windows. GigSky’s are sold by allowance, from a few hundred megabytes to twenty gigabytes. That difference decides the page.
An allowance makes you ration. That is not automatically bad — most cruisers use far less data than they fear, and a small plan bought deliberately is usually cheaper than an unlimited window bought for peace of mind. But it means checking a counter, and some people will simply not enjoy their holiday while doing that.
A duration plan removes the counter and replaces it with a different question: is the ship yours for the whole window? A seven-day unlimited plan on a fourteen-night cruise is two purchases, and the second one is bought at sea.
This site ranks unlimited plans by imputing twenty gigabytes per thirty days, pro-rated by validity, so that they can sit on the same axis as metered ones. That is an assumption and it is stated on the methodology page. If you genuinely consume more than that, the imputation understates Maya; if you consume much less, it overstates it.

Maya.net plans
Maya sells a "Global + Cruise" unlimited plan in 3, 7, 14 and 30-day windows that bundles worldwide land coverage with at-sea data on Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, NCL, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages ships. It is the simplest option for anyone who refuses to think about data allowances.

The ship list is the deciding fact, not the price
Maya names Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Norwegian, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages. That is a good list and it is a considerably shorter one than GigSky’s, which runs to 290+ vessels across ten named lines plus thirty or more additional operators.
For a mainstream North American sailing on one of those seven lines, the gap does not matter — both cover you and the billing model decides. For anything outside them, and for European operators in particular, the gap is the entire comparison: a plan that is unlimited on a ship it does not cover is worth nothing.
Check your exact vessel on Maya’s own list before you get as far as comparing prices. It is the cheapest step in this decision and the one most likely to end it.
"Unlimited" is a shaped product on both sides, and neither hides it
Maya’s unlimited at sea is generous rather than infinite — treat it as a fair-use product, because on a shared satellite backhaul nothing else is physically possible. Every provider selling unlimited data over a ship’s link is selling a managed connection, and the honest ones say so.
GigSky is unusually specific about where its own line sits: full speed to 3.5 GB in a day, reduced speed for the rest of that day, full speed again the next morning. You are never cut off and never billed extra. Published thresholds are better than unpublished ones, because you can plan around a number and cannot plan around a policy.
The practical consequence is the same on both: streaming video from mid-ocean is not what either product is for. Download before you sail.
Land coverage: global versus regional, and why regional is often better
Maya bundles unlimited worldwide land data with the cruise coverage, which sounds strictly better than a regional plan and frequently is — a world cruise or a multi-continent repositioning sailing is exactly the case for it.
GigSky takes the opposite approach: four regional variants, covering the Americas and the Caribbean, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East, with the country count published per variant. On a seven-night Caribbean loop the regional plan covers every port you will see, and you are not paying for the hundred-odd countries you will not.
So "worldwide" is a real advantage on a long, wide-ranging itinerary and a mild disadvantage on a normal one. Match the shape of the plan to the shape of the trip rather than to which word sounds larger.
One of them lets you find out first
GigSky’s free 100 MB cruise trial needs no card and does not auto-renew. Install it before you sail, confirm it connects once you are past twelve nautical miles, and you have answered the only question that actually matters. Maya has no trial.
On a product where coverage is fitted vessel by vessel and the lists change as installations complete, being able to test is worth more than a modest price difference. It is the single strongest argument for GigSky on this page, and it has nothing to do with billing models.
Who should buy which
The answer changes with the itinerary more than with the provider, so this is by traveller rather than by feature.
| If this is you | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A heavy user on a short sailing — three to seven nights | Maya | The per-day cost of an unlimited window is genuinely competitive over a short trip, and you stop thinking about data entirely. This is what the product is built for. |
| A light or moderate user on any itinerary | GigSky | Most cruisers use far less than they expect. A small metered plan bought deliberately usually costs less than an unlimited window bought for reassurance. |
| Anyone sailing outside Maya’s seven named lines | GigSky | It is the wider list by a long way, and unlimited data on an uncovered ship is worth nothing at all. |
| A world cruise or a multi-continent repositioning voyage | Maya | Unlimited worldwide land data across many carrier territories beats buying a regional variant and then discovering the next continent is outside it. |
| A first-time buyer who wants proof before paying | GigSky | The free trial is the only way to confirm your specific hull is covered. Maya has no equivalent. |
Our verdict
GigSky for most people, on vessel coverage and on being testable rather than on price. The ship list is wider, the regional land plans fit a normal cruise better than a worldwide one, and the free trial removes the only genuinely unanswerable question in this market.
Maya if your ship is on its list and you know you are a heavy user on a short sailing. Unlimited-by-duration is a real product with a real audience, and for someone who resents watching a data counter on holiday it is the right purchase.
What we would not do is choose between these two on headline price. They are billed on different axes, and our own per-gigabyte figure for Maya is an imputation rather than a measurement — useful for ranking, not precise enough to decide a close call.
GigSky vs Maya.net: your questions
01Is Maya really unlimited at sea?+
It is unlimited in the sense of not being metered, on a connection that is shared and managed. Every provider selling unlimited data over a ship’s satellite backhaul is selling a fair-use product — that is a physical constraint rather than a policy choice. Treat it as generous, not infinite.
02Which one covers more ships?+
GigSky, by a considerable margin. Maya names seven mainstream lines; GigSky lists 290+ vessels across ten named lines plus thirty or more additional operators. If your ship is on both, the billing model decides. If it is only on one, that decides instead.
03Do both work in port as well as at sea?+
Yes — both cover both zones on a single plan, which is what makes this comparison unusual on this site. GigSky does it with a regional land plan matched to your cruising area; Maya bundles worldwide land data.
04How do you compare an unlimited plan to a metered one?+
We impute twenty gigabytes per thirty days, pro-rated by validity, so a seven-day unlimited plan counts as roughly 4.7 GB. It is an assumption applied identically to every provider, and it is stated on our methodology page rather than hidden inside a ranking.
05Which is better for a fourteen-night cruise?+
Check the window lengths first. Maya sells fourteen and thirty-day options, so a fourteen-night sailing fits cleanly; a seven-day window would mean buying again at sea, which is the one purchase you want to avoid. GigSky’s allowances are bought once for the voyage regardless of length.
